Linen Closet A Mess – We’ve Got You Covered!

February 1, 2018 | Leave a Comment

folded towels on shelves

If your linen closet is like ours, it holds a lot of things besides linens! In fact, it may be the “catch-all” for items without a designated storage place. As a result, linen closets become cluttered, disorganized, and sloppy. Sound familiar? Then it is time to reorganize your linen closet. Here are four basic steps to an easy and efficient reorganization.

Three P’s Of Linen Closet Organization

Purge:

Empty the shelves and sort the items in your linen closet into three piles: keep, throw away, and donate. Bag the items to donate or discard, and remove them immediately. Before putting things back, think about whether or not they really should be kept in the linen closet. These questions will help.

  • What are they used for?
  • Where do I use them?
  • How often do I need them?
  • Do I need more than one?

Prepare:

  • Wipe down the shelves with a damp cloth. Allow them to dry completely.
  • Line your shelves. A good shelf-liner is an un-buffered, acid-free tissue paper that does not discolor fabrics.

Place:

  • Time to put things away in an orderly manner.
  • Keep the main items – towels and sheets – front and center.
  • Store entire sheet sets in one of the matching pillowcases. This makes it easier to find all the pieces when needed.
  • If you have multiple beds of different sizes, use different colored sheets for different beds.
  • Roll the towels to take up less space.
  • Group dinner napkins and table runners together. Keep them on the sides or at the top of the closet if they are used infrequently. Or, store them in your dining room.
  • Hang tablecloths and antique linens on non-wire hangers. Alternatively, fold them flat and stack them on a shelf lined with acid-free tissue paper.
  • Store bulky items like comforters, quilts, and pillows that are for guests in vacuum-sealed storage bags. These bags seal out moisture and bugs. Store these items in a bedroom closet or under the bed.
  • Keep toiletries and cleaning items in the bathroom, not in the linen closet. If any of these products spill, they can stain or damage fabrics.
Keep Linens Fresh

There is nothing better than freshly cleaned sheets and towels.

  • To keep them fresh, place a box of baking soda in the linen closet.  It will absorb dampness and odors.
  • Use lavender sachets to add a relaxing scent.
  • Rotate your towels and linens. Place newly cleaned linens in the back and bring the ones in back forward so you use them next.
  • Launder and clean all unused linens at least every six months to prevent staleness and decomposition from dust and moisture.

When it is time to clean your linens, bedding, and comforters, bring them to your local Flair Cleaners. Our cleaning professionals at all five locations, Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, Burbank, Valencia, and Studio City, are trained to ensure that your linens are returned to you fresh, clean and ready for use.
